9 pm, Heart of Woman Concert:

Because music is a powerful tool for integrating intellect and emotion, our retreat begins with a musical event entitled Heart of a Woman. Women musicians Kit Holmes, Dana Clark, and Wave Harless present music that evokes what is common to every woman's life journey; love, family, healing, personal growth, relationships empowerment, spirituality and sexuality. Besides their many original songs, they honor their musical foremothers from Bessie to Billie. The concert is designed to open our hearts to a deeper understanding of our lives, so that we may more clearly perceive our situations and discover new possibilities.

The activities that follow on Saturday and Sunday will expand on the mood set and help us leave our hectic worlds for a short time, gaining perspective so that we can return, renewed and refreshed.

More about the Musicians:

Kit Holmes: Singer/songwriter, keyboard, guitar, bass.
Kits natural talents as a musical artist are most apparent in her performance on keyboards and piano. Vocals run a pretty close second, as do guitar, bass, percussion, and just about any other instrument she puts in her hands. Her gigs have been as diverse as the styles of music she embraces in her writing. She wrote her first song at age 9 about her dog Patches. Since then she's won awards in song writing competitions, performed, composed, arranged, produced, and engineered for solo artists, bands, festivals, small businesses, trade associations, churches and theater groups across the country.

Kit wrote and performed her original songs with all kinds of bands and in all kinds of music genres throughout the years. Her original songs continue to win awards and competitions. The title track for her latest CD, “It's a New Day” captured a third place win and then became the theme song for the Austin-Area Interfaith Ministries. Listen to her songs at www.kitholmesmusic.com.

In 2007 Kit found herself invited to speak, teach and consult, not only about songwriting and the music business, but also about her personal and spiritual growth. She has been very well received and now teaches workshops on music and spirituality. Her plans for world domination via love and laughter are unfolding beautifully.

Dana Clark: Singer/songwriter, piano, flutes, sax, guitar, mandolin
Dana played the Chicago music scene for nine years and traveled to perform at more than fifty colleges throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. She studied jazz piano with Skip Green and Chicago blues with Erwin Helfer. She has recorded several albums/CDs of original music, and produced two CDs on the theme of peace for A Season for Nonviolence. For her dedication to peacemaking through music she was awarded the Bahai Unity of Humanity Award in 2010 and was nominated for the Martin Luther King Distinguished Achievement Award in 2007. She has published two songbooks of her compositions, and her songs have been included in several books published by the Unity and Unitarian Universalist churches. Her non-fiction articles about music have appeared in a number of newsletters and in the book Insights on the Journey by Maureen Leach. She has a full teaching schedule of vocal and instrumental students and presents music workshops for adults. A member of First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Antonio, she has served for seven years as Music Director at the Unity Church of SA, where she leads the band “Synergy.” www.lewisandclarkmusic.com.

Wave Harless: Drums and percussion
Wave is a Texas percussionist and recording artist with over 30 years experience. She has played with a wide variety of Central Texas samba, drum and dance groups, original folk/rock duos and bands, Kerrville Music Festival artists, and Christian music choirs. She is co-founder of both the Timekeepers Percussion Ensemble and the Texas Ladybugs women’s music group. A student of Cherokee teachings and spirituality, she has completed facilitators training with Arthur Hall of Santa Cruz, the pioneer father of community drum circles. She believes in the drum’s voice as a powerful tool for healing, self-empowerment, and community building.
